Perhaps this has been posted already. I got an email from Steve's wife saying that Steve died last week after allergic complications from a medication. Steve was a real gentleman and a fountain of knowledge about Oregon and the Oregon wilds. Steve and I had become quite good friends on-line as a result of my fire lookout blog, and I was looking forward to a meet-up with Steve in the near future.
Steve Deshazer: RIP dear friend.

(23,018 posts)but journey long before me lies.
Farewell, friends! I hear the call.
The ship's beside the stony wall.
Foam is white and waves are grey;
beyond the sunset leads my way.
Foam is salt, the wind is free;
I hear the rising of the Sea.
Farewell, friends! The sails are set,
the wind is east, the moorings fret.
Shadows long before me lie,
beneath the ever-bending sky,
but islands lie behind the Sun
that I shall raise ere all is done;
lands there are to west of West,
where night is quiet and sleep is rest.
Guided by the Lonely Star,
beyond the utmost harbour-bar,
I'll find the heavens fair and free,
and beaches of the Starlit Sea.
Ship, my ship! I seek the West,
and fields and mountains ever blest.
Farewell to Middle-earth at last.
I see the Star above my mast!

(14,549 posts)I'm probably nuts for using my real name, but they'd know how to find me anyway.
I found DU in the summer of 2001 and lurked for a while, finally jumping in around March 2002. I can't believe ten years have passed and how much has happened. I think DU had about 5000 members then.
When G.W. Bush was installed as pResident in 2001, and 9/11 happened, and illegal and immoral wars were started, I thought the whole world had gone insane. After ten plus years here, I've learned that it's even worse than that! DU has kept me out of the asylum the whole time. If Skinner, Elad and EarlG had not created this cool thing I might just be in a padded cell. Thanks, fellas.
I live in Portland O with my wife Ms. D, and our very large lynx point Siamese cat, Jack. They jointly rule my life. We have two adult children who also live in Portland. I'm fortunate to have met a pretty good number of fellow DUers in person who also live here. For a small city, Portlanders are well represented on DU.
Despite having an excellent job at the start of the Bush reign of error, I'm now a delivery truck driver making about 50% of what I made in the post-Clinton economy. Thanks, Supreme Court tools.
Please vote for President Obama in November. We can't afford to let Willard Robme into the White House!
If you're new here, hit me up. I won't bite!
Peace and love,
Steve

While I can't attend his funeral -- I'd have my brother in Oregon go, if I knew when it was -- I will definitely be spending some time, over the next week, out at my sweat lodge/ pond, remembering a Good Man, praying for his family, and celebrating my opportunity to get to know Steve. (5,376 posts)As a fellow Oregonian, I always appreciated Steve's intelligence and the insights he shared about our state's political scene. He will be sorely missed. I had hoped to meet him one day, perhaps on one of my rare trips across the mountain. I liked his signature line: "I don't know where I'm going but I'm on my way." I trust his journey was safe and peaceful.

(2 posts)Hi everyone,
It's amazing to come here and be reminded just how many people loved and knew my dad. I know this community was a big part of his life and he really enjoyed talking with all of you. As far as we know he had a severe adverse reaction (angioedema) to his blood pressure medication. This is reported as happening in approximately 0.13% of people who take Lisinopril but in most cases is easily treatable under emergency medical care. My dad didn't deserve this and his light went out far too soon. Those of you who know him may also remember he lost his mom and brother both within the last 2 years. While this is a tough time for our family I am grateful to have had such an amazing dad in my life for 32 years. My fervent hope is that all the good folks here and my brother and Ms. D and I will keep the memories alive and carry on his tradition of questioning authority and sticking up for the little guy. He has instilled right and wrong in us and encouraged us to be independent thinkers and that is the greatest gift anyone could give their kids.
Again, thank you for all the kind words. Keep hope alive!
Peace and love

(109,665 posts)So kind of you to come to DU and give us all the chance to express our profound sympathies on the loss of your father. I wish that I had the perfect comforting words to express to you, but alas, I do not. Just know that he would be proud to know that he lives on through you and as one who still feels the loss of their own parents, those memories will sustain you.
All the best to you, Staci and much love from Steve's DU family.

(2,921 posts)I have a LOT of respect for your Dad throughout the years. I enjoy talking with him and debating the issues that we've both had for many years, and finally I was just talking to your father as early as last week, and I still find it very hard to believe that he's gone so soon.
Hopefully you can stay on and carry on your dad's spirit.

(5,376 posts)Oregon needed him and was a better place because of him. I live in Central Oregon and had hoped the time might come when I could make it over the hill to meet with him and other DUers in the Portland area. Hard to put into words how much all of us valued and relied upon him. Your amazing dad's legacy will live on here on DU and in the lives of all who knew him.
Blessings to you and your family, and welcome to DU.

(2 posts)I've lurked on here for years but it's high time I joined and started participating. I think my dad would've liked that! Tonight my brother and I are going to spend some time together raising our glasses to his memory and probably discussing the many horrific failings of Paul Ryan.
